Quote Review: Raging Bull (1980)

“Don’t overcook it. You overcook it, it’s no good. It defeats its own purpose.”

Scorsese gives us probably his most hard-hitting film (pun not intended) in the over three-decade-old Raging Bull, providing a great break in the routine of inspirational boxing films.  This examination of a tragic inevitability isn’t for the faint of heart, but it’s sure to stick with viewers long after their (first) experience with it.

Quote Review: Stardust Memories (1980)

“What is it the comedian says when his jokes are going well? ‘I murdered that audience’…’I killed ’em’…’They screamed’…’I broke ’em up.'”

Though viewers apparently appreciate Stardust Memories most for its similarities and references to other works (whether by Allen or not), going into the movie blind doesn’t mean enjoyment will be absent. Truth be told, it’s a bit of a commentary on how any director can imagine or actually see things; giving us the serious and silly points back and forth. It’s not the most investing film out there, but still well worth checking out even if you’re barely familiar with Allen’s other works.
