Quote Review: Stardust Memories (1980)

“What is it the comedian says when his jokes are going well? ‘I murdered that audience’…’I killed ’em’…’They screamed’…’I broke ’em up.'”

Though viewers apparently appreciate Stardust Memories most for its similarities and references to other works (whether by Allen or not), going into the movie blind doesn’t mean enjoyment will be absent. Truth be told, it’s a bit of a commentary on how any director can imagine or actually see things; giving us the serious and silly points back and forth. It’s not the most investing film out there, but still well worth checking out even if you’re barely familiar with Allen’s other works.

Quote Review: The Docks of New York

“Are you goin’ to let me have a good time in my own quiet way, or must I take this place apart?”

For a silent black and white film, The Docks of New York is surprisingly effective at creating a series of similar shots that are every bit as drab and gritty as they are fascinating. At the very least, it’s interesting to look back on one of the earlier works of film and see said style handled well even by today’s standards.

Quote Review: The Artist (2011)

“I won’t talk!  I won’t say a word!”

More than a tribute and far from an empty throwback, The Artist goes beyond being a reminder of cinema’s beginnings and is sure to strike a chord with anyone who’s had the experience of sudden and seemingly unwelcome changes coming to their field of work, living or even entertainment. With little to speak of itself, the film relies on the long-since-abandoned emotion without audible words, and the results are a wonderful breath of revitalized air. It’s ultimately, to my experience, the best film of 2011.
