Quote Review: The Docks of New York

“Are you goin’ to let me have a good time in my own quiet way, or must I take this place apart?”

For a silent black and white film, The Docks of New York is surprisingly effective at creating a series of similar shots that are every bit as drab and gritty as they are fascinating. At the very least, it’s interesting to look back on one of the earlier works of film and see said style handled well even by today’s standards.

Quote Review: Erin Brockovich (2000)

“Isn’t it funny how some people go out of their way to help others, when others just fire them?”

Roberts and Finney shine in a surprisingly inspirational tale while commentating without directly saying that much. Parts do come off a bit convoluted and unresolved, but there’s a down-to-earth personality the film embodies as an everyday low is eventually brought to a grand scale. And all the while, little plausibility is compromised in what ends up as a convincing, occasionally touching and generally entertaining film.

Quote Review: Fracture (2007)

“What’re you gonna do, keep asking the same question different ways so you get the answer you want?”

Fracture dips and sways itself into a small guessing game which, as it turns out, offers more potential intrigue than actual payoff. Hopkins and Gosling fit into their roles well enough and get about as much as one might expect, but the promising premise fails to yield much of a plot or significant enough development to carry things out up to the abrupt ending.
